Abstract

Physician Assistants (PAs) are a new type of practitioner that have recently been introduced in Ontario. In order to spread awareness about PAs among current and future health care professionals, this review article had two main objectives. First, to provide a summary for clinicians that illustrates how the use of PAs can affect patients, physicians and the cost of providing health care. Second, to review the literature on the use of the PAs in Canada to assess progress thus far. Literature from other countries illustrate that PAs contribute positively to patients and physicians in a financially sustainable manner. The three Canadian studies reviewed illustrate that PAs are having a positive impact on several aspects of clinical care.
