Optical tracking system technology is a widely available tool for various surgical applications in many hospitals. Various issues relating to the advantages and disadvantages in using this technology as well as surgeon acceptance has been the subject of research in recent years. In this commentary, current optical tracking system advantages and limitations are discussed as well as potential opportunities are presented. We also present a new state-of-the-art optical tracking system developed in our research lab that uses optical surface imaging.
